NEW HOPE, MISS. (WCBI) – Preventing brain and spinal cord injuries are top priorities when it comes to protecting the wellbeing of our children. Educators in the New Hope School District are making sure all elementary school age children get a safety helmet. That adds up to 1,100 helmets distributed to students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Over the past three years the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation has given out about thirty thousand safety helmets to elementary school children.

“So we are giving out these safety helmets, they can be used with bicycles, scooters, skate boards, or anything like that. We’re just trying the prevent brain injuries,” said Allison Lowther, Ms. Dept. of Rehabilitation.

Fees collected from DUI and moving violations are making it possible for those kids to get a free helmet.
