MATHISTON, Miss. (WCBI) — The biggest day in a boy scout’s life is when he becomes an Eagle Scout, but it takes more than just starting a fire to earn that badge.

With a shovel in hand, Starkville Scout, Brett Bailey, is digging away hoping to become an eagle scout.

Before a scout earns his badge, they must complete a project that demonstrates true leadership. Bailey decided to go with a suggestion from his history teacher.

“Lavelle McAlpen he’s a big part of the government here in Mathiston suggested I do this. I was in need of a project searching desperately for one and he suggested, hey we’re building a veteran’s monument and we would love for you to help out,” says Brett Bailey.

Bailey is partnering with the town of Mathiston to stand for true American sacrifice.

The monument will be dedicated to twenty Webster and Choctaw County residents who lost their lives in previous wars.

Bailey’s father, chuck, couldn’t be more proud of his son’s accomplishments.

“He’s really worked hard on this and of course a lot of other things through society and this is kind of the final moment the final project so as somebody said it’s the end but also thE beginning,” says Chuck Bailey.

Jesse Ivy, recently earned his Eagle Scout title through his own service project. Ivy says these projects can be difficult without the right help.
“Takes a lot longer and it’s a lot more difficult with just one person working it. There is always going to be three and four people that are helping you with it like your parents and friends and it’s always a big help,” says Jesse Ivy.

“I feel that these guys out here who are helping me and digging in the dirt getting the work done that they just have that much more respect for what’s going on here,” says Bailey.

As the flags fly high in Mathiston Park, Bailey hopes residents see true meaning of service.

A flag ceremony was held after the monument was completed.
