TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — For more than 10 years, teenagers have had the opportunity to get an inside look at the world of law enforcement. The junior police academy teaches cadets all aspects of police work, and they even get some hands on experience.

It is all about gun safety as the second week kicks off for junior police academy cadets.

For the past week, participants have learned the in’s and out’s of police training, and that includes waking up before sunrise, physical training and completing various obstacle courses.

After many hours spent learning in the classroom, cadets got to try their hand at some target practice.

“I think it’s important to know how to safely use a gun because a lot of bad scenarios can happen if you don’t know how to use a gun safely,” Capt. Jayla Sanders said.

Instructors say handling a weapon has three key points.

“First, make sure your muzzle is pointed straight and not in harms way, second, make sure your pointer finger is not on the trigger and third, make sure it’s not loaded,” Sanders said.

Another key for the week — guns are to be respected, but not feared

“Things that is important to me is a positive image for firearms and firearms use. So, we want to make sure that anytime we start young people out, we start out with a good safety program. And of course, the NRA is a national standard for not old instruction but safety, as well,” NRA Safety Expert Kevin Owens said.

Participants say the camp has many benefits.

“It gives you a clear idea and mind to what your going to be ready for when you get older, and it helps you with discipline and it’s a great experience. You have really good fun,” Sanders said.

Junior police academy cadets will graduate this Friday in a special ceremony.
