TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — He was arguably the greatest entertainer ever, and his death at 42 and the circumstances surrounding it saddened millions. Now, a couple from California has written a book and screenplay that looks at the message Elvis might have had for his fans had he been given a second chance.

George and Christine Gomez are spending some time in Tupelo getting in touch with Elvis’ early years.

They wrote a screenplay and a book titled “Saving the King.”

“It’s a book about redemption, it’s a book about how God gave Elvis a second chance,” George Gomez said.

George Gomez was raised in the South and was a huge Elvis fan. Like many, he was stunned when Elvis suddenly passed away.

“We were in shock, we didn’t understand how a man could have died of a heart attack at 42,” George Gomez said. “Only his inner circle knew about his afflictions and addictions and we didn’t know till later on, so I wanted to come up with a story of how I can find closure to his life, but a different ending to his life.”

So Gomez and his wife put their thoughts on paper. It is a mix of reality and fantasy that sees the entertainer come face to face with his prescription drug abuse before it’s too late.

“50 percent of the book is on an island,” Christine Gomez said.

Now, George and Christine hope to bring the book to the big screen. They have a New Orleans-based producer on board and are scouting possible locations for the movie. Negotiations are underway with Elvis Presley Enterprises and funding is being secured.

The couple say the movie will be entertaining but with a strong message.

“I want people to remember Elvis, and what a wonderful person he was,” Christine Gomez said. “But I also want people to look around them and see if there’s anybody in their life who might need help and might need that extra push and a little helping hand.”

Shooting could start early next year.

5 percent of the profits from the project will go to the Elvis Presley Charity Foundation.
