STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Instead of riding bikes, playing sports, and getting dirty some Starkville kids are getting a crash course in finances at summer camp.

They’re learning the value of money… counting quarters, dimes and nickels.

“You can’t have a lot of money, you never know what could go wrong,” said camper Aleah Graham.

The Starkville summer camp “healthier You” is teaching kids, from kindergarten to 8th grade, financial literacy, exercise, nutrition and proper etiquette.

“Starting kids off from kindergarten understanding what money is, savings, interest, large terms that a lot of adults don’t understand so that when they become adults and go to college or into the working force they are not going to be confused or get lost in those terms,” said Camp Coordinator Lacy Jaudon.

The week long program has youngsters rotating through classes, learning what to do in different social situations and getting in their fair share of outdoor exercise.

“We learn a lot about exercising and having fun,” added camper Allisia Hendricks.

“There’s bad and good peer pressure, it’s good for your friends to do good peer pressure on you because it encourages you to do different things,” said camper Jadyn Bowen.

“They seem to be loving it and when they come back the next day they’re parents tell me that the high light of their day was going to comp and learning about money and being able to exercise,” added Jaudon.

And as untraditional as that sounds, it has kids raising their hands to learn more.
The week long camp will conclude this Friday.
