OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – First responders and law enforcement were spread thin all day.

By noon, patrolmen from Starkville’s Troop G of the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to 20 wrecks .

Sheriff’s deputies in Webster county worked 14 accidents by mid morning.

In the golden triangle area, there were no serious injuries, but in Oktibbeha county, one accident turned into a dramatic rescue.

From one scene to another. It happened all morning.

Icy bridges caused many drivers to slide off the road.

Volunteer firefighters with the Oktibbeha County Fire Department responded to weather-related wrecks throughout the day, including this one on highway 25 near the Cedar Bluff exit.

“We were toned out again for a single car motor vehicle accident where someone had gone off the road and was stranded out in the water,” said Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Greg Wall.

When Greg Wall, Fire Chief of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department, arrived on scene, he found the driver of the truck and a concerned citizen sitting on top of the vehicle roof, waiting for help.

“I didn’t know how deep the water was and I went to them with a rope thinking I could put her on my back and bring her back out but the water was neck-deep on me, so we had to go to plan b,” added Wall.

When Wall realized there was no rescue boat nearby, he did what he is trained to do and went in the water to the victim.

“The two of us brought her out and got her in a warm place,” said Wall.

The driver of the truck had no injuries and Wall says being weather alert during a time like this is most important.

“I think people just did not realize the bridges were iced over and they’re traveling to fast and the black ice, nobody can see it and it’s very, very dangerous. We need to slow down and monitor the weather,” added Wall.

The MHP warns drivers to always buckle up, slow down and when in doubt, stay off the roads.
