COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus City Council soon will have to fill a vacancy on the city school board.

Board member Greg Lewis has submitted his resignation to city officials.

Lewis was named to the school board in March but in August, was named director of the Columbus Lowndes Recreation Authority to replace Roger Short who is retiring at the end of this month.

At the time, Lewis said he would step down from the school board to avoid any conflict and to focus on the recreation department. But some city leaders encouraged him to stay on the school board as long as possible.

The city council likely will announce the vacancy next month and fill the position in February.
