CLAY COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)–A Clay County man is engaged in the fight of his life. Surrounded by relatives at his home, Johnathan Doss has been fighting to stay alive for the last 8 months as his body has been under attack by an enemy Doss knows by name.

“Like one in 1,000 people get it. I mean, it is really rare. And the name of it is sclerosis Encapsulating Peritonitis, which is dealing with your scarred tissue,” said Johnathan Doss/Battling Rare Disease.

“His abdominal cavity is enclosed in a capsule. Its smooshing his stomach and his intestines. They are all smooshed together. And basically when he tries to eat nothing can pass between his stomach to his abdominal cavity,” said Raven Doss/Niece.

Although a 2013 kidney transplant was successful and shows no sign of being rejected, Doss is steadily losing weight and is in need of an operation. Only three surgeons in the world are able to operate on Doss, and from what we understand one is standing by in Cleveland Ohio when all of our patient’s financial business is taken care of. That includes 20 percent that’s not covered by insurance.

“Birmingham told me it comes from doing dialysis for nine and a half years, peritoneal dialysis. And it just formed up like that,” said Johnathan Doss.

“And so he is basically surviving on the TPN (total parental nutrition). Its basically, broken down nutrients into a component where he can go straight into his veins. And its basically already ingested so that’s how he gets his nutrition,” said Raven Doss.

And so Doss continues battling two enemies at once. His rare disease, and time.

“We are talking in a matter of days. The longer we wait the more his condition is deteriorating,” said Raven Doss.

“Cause if I don’t get any help I mean you know, steady trying to live off TPN and what God is doing for me and the fluid you know. My time is pretty much winding down,” said Johnathan Doss.

A “Go Fund Me” account is being set up on Facebook under the heading “Saving Johnathan,” along with a trust fund at the local Regions Bank.
