COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Greg Lewis has been named the new Columbus-Lowndes Recreation Authority executive director.

The organization’s board made the selection after a series of hour-long interviews with four finalists Wednesday afternoon.

The other finalists included the head of rec departments in Starkville and Madison County, Tenn., and the athletic director at Horn Lake.

Sixteen people originally applied after long-time director Roger Short announced this summer he would retire at the end of the year.

The CLRA board, which makes autonmous policy decisions although it is appointed and funded by Columbus and Lowndes County as well as its fees, narrowed the field to the four finalists.

Lewis will begin Jan. 1 at a salary of $57,000 per year with a six-month probationary period.

Lewis’ selection must be approved by the Columbus City Council and the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors.

Lewis, the CLRA’s program director, said he would resign from the Columbus School Board to devote his attention to Lowndes County’s recreation programs and avoid any conflicts of interest.
