COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Columbus School District leaders turn to parents to improve reading scores.

The district held a meeting Thursday evening at Cook Elementary. Educators passed on tutoring tips to help parents encourage better reading skills at home. This comes after practice test scores showed that more than 50% of students are not at the state mandated benchmark.

The Star Test is a reading exam that tests third graders, so that they can move on to 4th grade.

Practice tests given in the fall, and again last month did show a 9% improvement, but the district is still making a push for further improvement.

Parents of K-5 through third grade students attended the meeting.

The Star test is a part of the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act, passed by the 2013 Legislature. Testing will be held in April.
