COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A cold snap is headed our way and could be felt between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning when temps are expected to dip down into the twenties.

If you have planted flowers and they are beginning to look beautiful, you may want to prepare and brace yourself, for in the next couple of days temperatures are expected to drop. Potted plants and those growing outside should definitely be sheltered from the harsh elements.

“If its impractical to dig them up, lay some fabric over them. Not plastic, but fabric. Fabric doesn’t get cold like plastic does against them,” said Allan Smith, Smith’s Landscaping.

And for those brave and eager flower and vegetable garden growers who planted before Easter, you may also want to make special preparations to ensure the life of your plants.

“Tomatoes, well just all your tender vegetables are going to get hit. So you’re gonna have to cover them up, or something,” said Smith.

“Make it simple. You can take newspapers and tent them over your plants. A few buckets, just remember to move them off the next morning when the sun rises. And all else fails you can get out there and rinse if there is any frost or fall,” said Jeff Hays, Lowndes Farm Supply.

While ferns for instance, with a roof over them might have a chance, some other plants with delicate leaves could get damaged due to low temps. And so for some, covering or shielding the plant is one option. For others… a more drastic measure is needed.

“Tomorrow we’ll spend our day carrying every thing in the heated building, so, then bring it all out again on Wednesday. Just love it. Ha, ha, ha, ha,” said Smith.

If plastic is used to cover plants overnight, experts say make sure to remove sweating moisture off plants the next day.
