COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -24 Columbus city retirees will lose their city health insurance at the end of this year. The move approved today by the City Council will save taxpayers more than 400 thousand dollars in increased costs. Experts say the retirees can easily get insurance from private companies or the nation’s new health insurance exchanges.

Overall, the council completed budget work today with a 300 thousand dollar deficit that will be funded from reserves. It includes a one point one mill tax increase. Some council members say they may seek more to offset the deficit and to cut the 165 thousand in training and travel budget to give city workers at least a small raise.
