COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–A Columbus city councilman seeking a statewide position throws his hat into the ring for a seat in the Mississippi Legislature.

Surrounded by family friends and relatives at Helen’s Kitchen, two term councilman Kabir Karriem announces plans to run for State Representative for District 41.

The seat is now held by Representative Esther M. Harrison. According to District 5 Councilman Karriem, elected to city government in 2009, Lowndes County is undeserved and needs aggressive leadership.

“When you start talking about the minimum wage, equal pay for women for equal work. Fully funding education, continued economic development. Which I served on the Lowndes County Industrial Development Board, before I became a councilman,” said Kabir Karriem/Columbus City Councilman.

Primaries are scheduled for August 4th.
