COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Veterans Day may be celebrated this coming Monday but local veterans were honored with a parade on Saturday by the Columbus Air Force Base and other military organizations.

The Lowndes County Veterans Day Parade began at the Columbus Municipal Complex and finished at the Lowndes County Court House. Nearly 30 vehicles participated including fire trucks and security forces vehicles. The Air Force Base Honor Guard lead the parade. A wreath laying ceremony was held while community members and local veterans paid their respect to those who gave their life for their country.

“I served in the military from 1961-1985. I think we should honor our vets everyday for the work and the sacrifices that they do when they’re off in foreign countries protecting the United States,” says Army veteran, Willie Byrd.

Colonel Jim Sears was the keynote speaker for the event.
