COLUMBUS, MS (WCBI) – They dot the Columbus landscape honoring broadcasters, animation artists and pro athletes. Now another little known part of history may get a tribute. Columbus officials are considering a historic marker for Horace King, an African-American who was one of the great bridge builders in the Southeast in the years before and after the Civil War. He built one of the first bridges across the Tombigbee River at 4th Avenue South in Columbus in 1843. Marker supporters say his story is worth noting today.
“It’s important to pass history on to our children to let them know that we stand on the shoulders of giants and we come from a heritage of individuals who were more than just athletes or neighborhood folk.”

The marker would be placed at the recently restored old Highway 82 bridge in downtown Columbus. The city council will consider the issue Tuesday night.
