COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Strong thunderstorms Sunday afternoon played a role in several wrecks in North Mississippi, including one involving a Columbus police officer.

Chief Tony Carleton tells WCBI it happened shortly before 4:30 p.m., Sunday.

He says officer Mark Underwood was driving east on Highway 82, on his way to a wreck, when he ran off the road near the Military exit.

The roads were slick from the rain.

His patrol car spun around, and the back of the car hit a tree.

Underwood was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but Carleton says he’s OK.

No other cars were involved in the wreck.
