COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Columbus Police plan to start its gun buy back program next week. Police Chief Selvain McQueen is finalizing details for sites where area residents can bring weapons. Those should be announced later this week. The sites will be away from the police department and will be manned by two officers who will accept the weapons and pay owners cash. The program has been approved by the state Attorney General’s office. Police say the program is not a single answer to reducing violence and crime but say it has worked in other cities as part of a broader effort to get unused, stolen and other weapons off the streets.
