COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Just in time for the warmer weather, officials in Lowndes County have voted to extend the Columbus Riverwalk again.

The Columbus Riverwalk was recently extended and now Lowndes County Supervisors are looking to do it again. After a recommendation from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, 120 feet will be added to connect it with the Columbus Soccer Complex. Patrons who use the path say they’re looking forward to the expansion.

“We’ve been waiting on it. We love the Riverwalk and we’ve been waiting for the extension. This is our first time to go on it. So I think it’s a great idea,” says Teresa Darby, a Columbus resident.

The addition comes just one month after a 900-foot extension. The latest expansion will connect the Riverwalk to the soccer complex parking lot on the west side of Moore’s Creek.

“It’s a pretty good idea to connect it to the Soccer Complex with all the functions that go on in this area. It adds more travel time between parking area. It just brings different people together. Walking through here, you see different people everyday,” says Columbus resident, Brian Wagoner.

The project will not require re-bidding and the city and county will share the $6,000 cost of the new expansion.

Supervisors say they plan to hold a grand opening for the Riverwalk extensions in mid to late Spring.
