COLUMBUS, Miss. – Classes for students in Columbus may have started earlier this week, but now district leaders can officially start the school year with a new budget.

It didn’t take long for the Columbus school board to approve the 2013-2014 budget and ad valorem resolution early Saturday morning.

Currie Fisher was the only board member who opposed both measures.

School district officials told WCBI there isn’t much of a difference from last year’s budget, and there will be no tax increase for residents.

They say fortunately, they didn’t have to make any significant cuts.

“We had a slight decrease in our Mississippi Adequate Education Program funding from the state revenue, so we had to make some minor adjustments in our instructional program due to that,” said interim superintendent Edna McGill.

McGill says the school district actually has more teachers this year than it did last year.
