CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI) — Efforts to bring “quiet zones” to six busy rail crossings in and near downtown Corinth may come to a noisy end.

City leaders spent weeks working with the railroads and state and federal rail authorities on the idea, but during a public hearing Tuesday night, supporters of the idea were drowned out by opponents.

Some long-time downtown residents and business owners said they and their visitors find the train horns charming and comforting.

And plans to make two streets one way to make way for more crossing warnings could hurt downtown businesses that rely on trucks for deliveries.

City leaders say they will continue to gather information and work on alternatives before making any decision.
