MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — A form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. The disease directly affects memory loss that interferes with daily life activities such as eating, driving and recognizing family members.

Although there is still no cure for Alzheimer’s, doctors are still working toward finding one.

About every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops the disease.

Once diagnosed, Alzheimer’s cannot be reversed, but experts say early detection and treatment can slow the memory loss process down.

“If you get started on the drugs early enough, it seems to kind of slow that process down,” social worker Angela Ray said. “But if you just kind of deny it — ‘Oh I’m fine, I’m just stressed or depressed’ — if you don’t take care of it and get physically fit and take the medications, get exercise, eat properly, then it could lessen your life.”

For a proper Alzheimer’s diagnosis, schedule an appointment with your local neurologist.
