COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Two veterans are making their way from California to Washington, D.C.

They left San Diego weeks ago on their 3,400 mile journey to the capitol; and along the way, they’re handing out copies of the U.S. Constitution.

The two men are taking turns walking down the side of the road and proudly waving the American flag at the strangers on their route.

Jerry Oliver, 65, and Mark Lanham, 46, are two retired veterans hoping to remind Americans of their freedoms.

“Just let’s people know that we still got rights, still got freedom. We feel, as two veterans, stripping our freedom away from us, we need to defend the constitution,” says Lanham, a Gulf War veteran turned restaurant manager.

Oliver is a retired Vietnam Veteran and former U.S. Diplomat. He’s been saving for three years to make this journey.

Oliver and Lanham hope to reach the capitol by Veterans Day. Once there, they’ve put in a formal request to speak with President Obama about what they consider to be America’s vanishing freedoms.
