COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus School District (CSD) is stepping forward in offering assistance to students and families affected by the fatal fire.

Extra counselors are on hand at Columbus Middle School, where the 11-year-old fire victim attended school.

School officials want to help students and teachers cope with the loss of a fellow classmate.

It was a somber mood for those at the school, as the reality sets in, there are professionals to offer assistance in anyway possible.

“And we’re providing grief counseling for the kids, because at such a young age it’s just very difficult for them to understand tragedy and death, especially for a student that was sitting next to them yesterday, and is gone today,” Jannette Adams with the CSD said.

Adams says counselors will be on hand as long as they are needed at the school.

They are also beginning to organize a relief effort for the families.
