MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) -12 years ago the life of one EMCC student was changed forever. But his disability has not held him back from his dreams.

22 year old Chase Kyle wears a sling everyday. His left arm was severely injured in a dirt bike accident when he was only 10 years old.

“I paralyzed my arm, I broke my leg and right arm and from there it was a long recovery, long road. Without all my peers you know I probably and my instructors and my mom I probably couldn’t got to where I am,” said Chase Kyle.

Now, 12 years after the accident, his future couldn’t be more bright. Chase says his mother, who is a nurse, inspired him to enroll in EMCC’s Practical Nursing program.

“When I was little she picked me up from school, I’d go to the hospital, sit in the lounge. I’d dress up like the nurse and I’d go out on the floor and you know just play around, I got accustomed to the environment and I just really enjoyed it,” added Chase Kyle.

Chase is able to preform most of the tasks in the program on his own, but other times his classmates are ready to help out. One classmate says she’s honored to be able to stand next to him graduation day knowing how hard he’s worked.

“Being able to stand beside Chase knowing that he’s had a disability and we were kinda at an advantage then he was and so if we felt like we wanted to give up we could turn to him and see he never once tried to give up,” said classmate Amanda Brownlee.

“He’s very humble and there’s never been a down time with him, he’s always up. He’s been a real good friend throughout the year. He’s helped me study some hard time and you know I’m really grateful for him,” said classmate Lee Calvert.

After 11 months of hard work through the nursing program, Chase says his disability won’t hold him back and he’s excited for what the future has in store.

“You just have to stick with it, you know you just can’t go home one day and say man I can’t do this anymore. Sit down and just pray, that’s what I did, I prayed,” said Chase.

The Practical Nursing Graduation ceremony will be Thursday night at 6 pm at the EMCC Golden Triangle campus.
