CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Thousands of North Mississippians woke up without power today.

Utility crews have been working since Wednesday’s winter storm slammed the area with anywhere from 3 to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow, bringing down trees and power lines.
“They worked for nearly 36 hours straight,” said Norma Kilgore, General Manager at Natchez Trace Electric Power Association.

About half of Natchez Trace Electric Power Association’s 16,000 customers are without electricity, after nearly 8 inches of snow fell in Chickasaw County on Wednesday.

The blanket of white snow quickly put people in the dark, when heavy snow snapped tree limbs, bringing down power lines.

“Ice is a terrible dangerous thing to light lines, then on top of the ice being on the lines, it started snowing,” added Kilgore.

Now, linemen are working long hours and sometimes in areas that are difficult to get to.

As you can see behind me, crews from the Natchez Trace Power Association are working hard to restore power back to nearly half of they’re customers. They’ve called in additional help from crews around North Mississippi.

“We go and help others and others come and help us, that helps us repair the lines as quick as we possibly can,” said Kilgore.

The utility company knows it’s a difficult situation for customers but the extra manpower will help the restoration.

“I know it’s very stressful when your out there and you don’t know what’s going on, or when you will be gotten to and we apologize for that,” said Kilgore.

Natchez Trace Power says all electricity should be restored by this weekend.

Also, Monroe County Electric Power Association says extra crews have come to assist their efforts. Officials say less than 200 residents remain without power.
