STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – After years of helping out local families, Emerson Family Center in Starkville is recognized for its great importance.

“To be a part of something that’s bigger than yourself that’s helping mankind promote the potential of others. You know give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside,” said Coordinator Elmarie Carr Brooks.

Mississippi Kids Count recognizes Emerson Family School as a program that’s making a difference for Starkville children and families. Coordinator of Emerson Family Resource Center, Elmarie Carr Brooks has spent decades working with kids. Her work has been rewarding every step of the way.

“That’s the most outstanding part, is seeing the growth in people. To know that it’s gonna impact kids, that’s where my focus, I’m gonna work so hard and I’m gonna put forward so much effort to help a parent knowing that it will help the children,” added Brooks.

Emerson Family School has been serving the Starkville School District since 1994, and the director says their biggest accomplishment is educating expecting mothers all the way from birth to seniors learning computer skills.

“We focus on young children starting from birth and pregnant moms and then move forward on through age 5 here and in addition to that we do provide support for parenting and marriage classes, so it’s just a whole gambit of various services,” said Director Joan Butler.

Thanks to the collaboration of local partners, most programs at Emerson are free.

“We hope that this will help instill this concept in other areas of our state and that we can serve to assist them so they can do out reach with families,” added Butler.

Mississippi Kids Count will recognize Emerson Family School Thursday (2-1-13) night at it’s “Light Up the Night” dinner.
