EUPORA, Miss. (WCBI)- Earlier this week, Officer Keith Crenshaw set up a spike strip on Highway 82 to end a high-speed chase when he was run over by robbery suspects traveling in a Black Nissan.

“We’ve never had in the history of Eupora an officer killed in the line of duty. Keith contacted me. He was one of the first ones to call and offer assistance to help. And he did that,” said Eupora Police Chief Gregg Hunter.

Chief Hunter remembers Crenshaw as a friendly man who was very active in his community.

“He was a volunteer fireman, he was a certified police rescue diver, he was a member of STORM. We’re hurting now. We’re a tight knit department and he’s going to really be missed,” said Chief Hunter.

Officer Crenshaw’s bravery showd in everything that he did.

“One afternoon, we received a call from a lady that was very upset and concerned. She had a python on snake in her yard and Officer Crenshaw heard this over the radio and was willing to come and assist me and he actually captured the snake with his bare hands which was something I was not willing to do but he was able to take it to the local veteran here in Eupora and it’s just one of many things that Keith was willing to do for the community,” said Chief Hunter.

Dozens of nearby agencies are reaching out to Eupora. Starkville Sgt. Laura Hines says there’s no bond closer than brothers in blue.

“Officers care about each other so much that they would die for each other and citizens. Keith is amazing in that he gave his life doing just that, protecting other officers and the community,” said Sgt. Hines.

It’s Keith’s amazing life and legacy that Chief Hunter, his department, and those who loved him the most will always remember.

“It’s going to be tough and we’re going to need a lot of prayers and support from friends, family also we need to remember his six children. And we’re going to be there for them but they’re going to need a lot of support,” said Chief Hunter.

Flags in Eupora are flying at half-staff to honor Crenshaw. Chief Hunter says they want to thank the community for their condolences. They’ve received assistance through donations, memorial funds and prayers.
