COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s all the rage. Herbal supplements are very popular, with claims to fight memory loss, boost energy and even help with lose weight. But if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Some supplements on the market are not what they claim to be at all.

R. H. Brown has more from an holistic expert on fake supplements.
On the shelves of stores and supermarkets in your community are bottles and packages of supplements that do some good, supposedly adding to the nutrients of what we eat.

“Its really important to realize that supplements are seen as food. They are a supplement to your food that you are eating. So of course there are benefits just as there are benefits to food.”

But when word surfaced of an investigation looking into well-known store brands of herbal products having fake ingredients, sold by even large national retailers, some nutritionist and experts were not caught off guard.

“It was no surprise to me at all. The supplements that I recommend, we are to order we order them ourselves and we have done extensive research on different companies. Or we send them to a place that we trust, like Roberts Apothecary.”

Even though there are product labels, there apparently were hidden filler ingredients and even possible contaminants inside herbal supplement containers. Consumers beware, herbal supplements claiming to improve or enhance a person’s health do not follow the same strict guidelines the FDA applies to prescription drugs.

“There are no regulations regarding to content of the supplement and so really there is no way for anyone in the public to know if a supplement is of high quality or not. So really the only form of regulation at this point is to go to someone you trust who has done research on different companies.”
