TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The attorney for a former Tupelo bailiff who was awarded $65,000 last week says he will go after additional pay for his client.

Late Friday evening, a federal jury decided that the City of Tupelo retaliated against Letisha Mitchell. She was awarded $65,000.

When Mitchell was serving as a bailiff in Tupelo Municipal Court in March of 2010, she went to get a prisoner from a holding cell.

She found the 250-pound man hanging from his t-shirt. She cut him down, and claims she injured her neck and back.

She claims she was forced out of a job after filing a discrimination charge with the EEOC relating to the case.

Her attorney, Jim Waide, says his client is not trying to get her job back, but will go after additional pay.

“They came up with a lot of testimony we proved to be absolutely false. We don’t believe anybody in the HR department can now be trusted. If we asked to be reinstated, we don’t believe you could trust the people working in the Human Resources department to be fair to her,” Waide said. “And we are going to ask the judge to award, front pay or additional pay. Now, the only job she’s been able to get is assistant schoolteacher.”

Calls to Tupelo City Attorney Ben Logan were not returned today.
