Video: Free Community College Tuition Plan Moves Ahead

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — A free tuition program that has given hundreds of high school graduates a shot at higher education is closer to going statewide. The House has approved and sent to the Senate a two-year pilot program to insure free tuition to high school grads attending any of the state’s 15 community colleges. The program would start this fall. Because of other grants and other scholarships already in place, state leaders think it’ll only cost taxpayers about 3 million next year an less than 5 million the year after. But they say it’ll pay huge dividends in a more skilled work force. The plan is modeled after similar deals pioneered at Itawamba, Northeast and East Mississippi during the last four years.
