ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Plans are in place for a farmers market and cannery to come to the city of Aberdeen.

The city plans to transform the old Kansas City Southern Railroad depot into a cannery.

With this new facility, the town hopes to offer not only fresh goods but a way to teach residents about nitrition.

The idea came from receiving a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the USDA and the Environmental Protection Agency back in October of 2013.

“We’re hoping that these are things that we can add and this will be a draw to our community and we also hope to have a little small retail store type area here that would sell only locally grown products,” says Ann Tackett.

Aberdeen hopes to have the business up and running this time next year.
