FULTON, Miss. (WCBI) Less than two months ago, Mississippi was in the thick of city elections. After 12 years as Fulton’s mayor, Paul Walker was defeated by Lynette Weatherford.

Lynette Weatherford has spent the last two decades working in city hall. But she’s only been behind the mayor’s desk for two weeks.

Lynette decided in January to run for the office of mayor, and six months later the city clerk upgraded to Fulton’s highest office.

“When you’ve been here that long you pretty much know everybody in the city,” said Weatherford.

While her title has changed, the town has taken time to adjust to her change of responsibilities.

“If they have a problem with their water bill they come to me. If they didn’t pay a fine and they were picked up and put in jail they come to me,” she said.

Mrs. Weatherford is not only Fulton’s new mayor in a decade, she is also the only female to ever hold the office.

To Lynette, this has changed very little about the way she views her position.

“The whole time I was running I hadn’t thought about that. I thought if I was to win I’d be the first mayor and I just felt like I was qualified.”

While Lynette has only been in office for less than a month, she has big plans for the future.

Right now many of her day to day activities include training the employees who have taken her old position, but that is soon to change.

“I’m going to do my best I’m going to do whatever it take for the 4 years to make the city the best it can be. We’re a growing city, we have so many resources here. I’m going to see that everything I do here is for the betterment of the city.”

Lynette was elected in June by over 90 percent of the towns voters.
