COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — While hundreds of Brides-to-be plan their big day at the annual Bridal Showcase, across town Veteran couples are taking notes on how to better their marriage. After 35 years, couple Lisa and Keith Burchfield continue to look for ways to keep their marriage alive.

“Coming to things like this is just fresh and it’s new and we’ve always hope that we could encourage young couples that you can make it that if you try and work hard at it and have a God centered marriage that it can last,” says Keith Burchfield.

The Marriage Tune Up conference at Fairview Baptist Church is encouraging couples to work and celebrate their marriage. Lisa says her favorite part of the conference so far are the skits.

“They’re fun and those are the things that they use…those things to help make it stick in your mind-type things and those are fun things to do,” says Lisa Burchfield.

Debby and Jeff Mcelroy, from Knoxville, Tennessee, travel around the United States helping married couples focus on their relationships. This year’s theme is, “I promised What?”

“It’s all about the promises that we make at the alter and how lovely they sound but then the reality of putting them into practice in our marriage in everyday life,” says Debby Mcelroy.

The conference even encourages couples like Kevin Jenkins and his wife to take a trip down memory lane.

“Asked us last night to look at our spouse and one thing we remember about our wedding for instance, of course my wife and I we know right away I stepped on her dress going up the steps and it ripped so that’s a memory that we have forever but there are some fun like that,” says Kevin Jenkins.

Whether couples are newlyweds or have been married for 40 years, the Mcelroys hope they understand the true meaning of the conference.

“Really trying to help couples understand we’re not here to try and fix each other. If I’ll work on making sure I’m who I need to be and my spouse does the same thing then we’re going to have a better marriage out of that,” says Jeff Mcelroy.

Local military, fire fighters and police officers were able to attend the conference for free.
