West Point, Miss. (WCBI) – It may be spring break but some West Point youngsters aren’t just lounging around the house.

Instead, they’ve tackled a different kind of learning on a different kind of classroom.

In order to perform in a big way on the field, little football players camped out at Zuber Park in West Point must first perform in the classroom.

And the kind of hard work they are learning about there may pave the way for their future, whether it’s on the gridiron or science lab.

“Like our program, you have to maintain a C average in every subject in school. So we are teaching them, trying to give them something to motivate them in the classroom as well as on the field,” said Lushunn Bennett, Youth League President.

Under the watchful eyes of active Mississippi State University football players like cornerback Justin Cox who are brought in during the week long camp, these young aspiring athletes are getting the basic fundamentals of the game.

“Well you know it all starts off when you are young. You got to love the game, you know. So I’m going to just come and give these boys a little speech. You know motivation, confidence that playing football, it takes hard work,” said Justin Cox, MSU Cornerback.

A few of the players on the Green Wave Youth League are related to Justin Cox and just might follow in his footsteps.

Young Anthony Jamaal Hayes the second’s father watched with pride…and a little hope for future potential.

“I think so, he is pretty fast, he is strong. So, and he is determined so that’s about all it takes,” said Anthony Hayes, West Point.

The camp meets five hours a day through Thursday.

West Point High players offer instruction and motivation Wednesday and players from the semi pro Mississippi Stallions will be with the youth on Thursday.

Registration is available on site as well.
