STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Confusion and controversy continue surrounding a proposed bond issue by the Oktibbeha County School District. That’s why the Greater Starkville Development Partnership is launching an informational campaign. Opponents of the 13 point two million dollar bond issue turned in enough signatures to force a vote.

Now supporters of the bonds, which would help pay for some of the costs of the upcoming consolidation with Starkville schools, have launched a counter petition… Allowing people to ask to have their names removed from the original petition.

The GDSP says its campaign is an effort to get more facts out about the bonds, so people can decide for themselves.

“We are taking this opportunity to use our resources and our board members and our membership to provide education to the public about the process let them know what the money is used for why it is so essential that local funding be attained and hopefully encourage people to remove their name from the petition if they originally signed it in error”

The State Department of Education has reviewed the petitions calling for a vote and will turn them over to the Oktibbeha Circuit Clerk on Monday to certify and determine if an election will be called on the issue.

Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton plans to consult with the state to determine the exact procedure for handling the original petitions and the reverse petitions in order to be fair to both sides.
