OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss.  (WCBI) — The Mississippi Horse Park arena will be filled with furry, four legged animals this weekend. Its all apart of the annual all-breed dog show. The weekend long event is hosted by the Golden Triangle Kennel Club of Mississippi, where the dogs showcase their unique talents.

All breeds of dogs are participating in the annual dog shows, obedience trials and rally trials. The pups participate in several categories to showcase their talents. The dog show always takes place on the second weekend in January, drawing in lots of visitors to Oktibbeha County.

“It’s that bond between people and dogs. It is really making the dogs a better animal, better relationship and the variety of dogs and personalities, it really is exciting to see,” said Rally Chairman, Diane Wall.

Although these particular dogs spend some extra time getting groomed and trained, they’re really just like any other lovable family pet.

“They’re in the household, they’re being loved, they do regular activities and the children in the household really enjoy those dogs,” said Wall.

Shelia Connolly has been showing and training dogs for around 15 years. This weekend she brought “Buddy” to his first competition. For the past month, Shelia has worked hard preparing “Buddy” for his first show.

“Where we train every single night and we work for our dinner and we live basically to learn,” said trainer, Shelia Connolly.

Shelia, who is also a recent graduate of Mississippi State University’s Veterinary School, says the shows have several benefits for the dogs.

“Gives them focus, they’re generally an easier dog to live with especially if they’re an obedience dog, they know what to expect,” said Connolly.

The show is free for spectators and will run through Sunday. Competition will start at 9am.
