GUNTOWN, Miss. (WCBI) — It was a pink party in the park for Guntown Middle School students and teachers.

There was also food for sale, rides for one dollar on a mechanical bull, a race and other fun activities. All proceeds go to the Susan G Komen Foundation as it funds research, education and other activities related to breast cancer.

“It’s a chance for us to support the mothers of the community and the state of Mississippi,” said Principal Steven Havens.

This event raises money and awareness about breast cancer in a fun way.But for a couple of teachers here it’s personal, they are survivors.

“Having this event is very important to me, because I want everyone to be aware that mammograms can save your life and it’s very important to early detection,” said Guntown Teacher Jennifer Brown, who is a breast cancer survivor.

“It makes me feel really good that they all come out and support this cause, and our administration are so wonderful, they let us have half a day of school they are missing instruction time to do this,” said Angela Doty, a teacher and breast cancer survivor.

Students say they have learned that anyone can make a difference, at any age.

“Anyone can help, even the smallest part is a help.Nothing is insignificant,” said eighth grader Brady Hinds.

This is the sixth year the middle school has hosted “Race for the Cure.”

In those six years, more than $10,000 has been raised for the Komen Foundation.
