OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI)-In the next few days, everywhere children and those young at heart will be celebrating Dr. Suess’ 109th birthday.

Baby Steps of Okolona is a group having a history of pioneering in early childhood education.

They are getting a head start on the celebration which is March 2nd.

What better way to honor the joys of reading than by having preschool children from 5 different daycare centers interact with rhythmic rhymes and imaginary characters like a cat who wears a hat.

“Some children just learn by different means, and by starting with them at an early childhood you are able to instill in them the right techniques and qualities to receive a decent education,” said Rev. J. D. King, Volunteer.

“And you see when you get them early and then you get them one year and the next year you come back and you can see the positive growth in those children,” said Ruth Dent, Okolona.

The mission of Baby Steps, initiated by Okolona native and Washington Post Columnist William Raspberry is to raise low school achievement levels by involving parents of children from birth to age 5.

What better way to jump start their education than by reading from entertaining books we’ve all come to love and treasure?

“Because it doesn’t do anything but give them a head start in life, and that is what we want to do,” said Dent.

“Helping them to develop good ideas and good techniques for receiving the learning thats being provided for them. Because they are going to need that so much in their life in the future as they grow older,” said Rev. King.

Kids and Kids at heart alike are sure to be Reading Across America, opening at least one of Dr. Suess’ books as he turns 109 Saturday.
