TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Healthworks! in Tupelo hosted the Wellness Summit, teaching Mississippi educators tools on how to better their student’s environment. More than 100 educators throughout the state gathered for sessions designed to teach them how to create a healthy environment in the classroom. Numerous sessions were presented to those in attendance including, “Move to Learn”, smart snacks in the classroom and promoting physical activity. Organizers say the school environment is vital to healthy students.

Healthworks! Director, Kathy Tucker said, “The department of education and the department of health have sponsored this activity for us to put together the programs for these teachers and school staff and are giving this information because the environment the kids are in is the most important. We’ve just finished a session now talking about how healthy students perform better on tests, healthy students are absent less and healthy students have less discipline referrals. All those things are really important in the learning environment.”

This is the fifth year for the Wellness Summit and organizers plan to bring the resource back next year.
