COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Bears, wildcats and turtles are just a few of the wild creatures young students learned about Wednesday (1-30-13).

Heritage Academy Elementary School was treated to visitor Deb Waz from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Third through sixth graders learned about the wildlife they can find right in their own backyard here in Mississippi.

“We’ve been learning about bears and all the animals, and how we can help them so they don’t become extinct,” said sixth grader Thomas Chain.

“I learned how to identify animals by their fur and their skull, and how people chip bears and track them to make sure they’re healthy,” said Lores Sharp, sixth grade student.

Students say they enjoyed taking a hands on approach to learning by investigating animal bones and fur.
