COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Students at Heritage Academy Elementary School are proving that no matter how young you are, you can still support a friend.

Two-year-old Mary Elizabeth King was diagnosed with leukemia in August. After seven weeks at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, she is now home in Columbus and in remission. Her big brother Gus is a pre-kindergarten student at Heritage Academy. Friday morning his classmates got their feet moving with a trike-a-thon to honor Elizabeth and raise awareness of the work of St. Jude’s. Parents John and Madelyn say they are happy to be home, and could not have done it without the community support.

“They’ve prayed for Elizabeth every morning at school. The community has reached out and done so much for us, bringing us meals and helping with Gus,” said Madelyn King.

“You never expect this is going to happen to you or your child, but to see how much people care about you and your child is really impressive, it’s really amazing,” said John King.

Elizabeth will continue to make a weekly trip to St. Jude’s for chemotherapy treatments. Big brother Gus is also very excited to have her home.
