CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Bob Mixon’s retirement hobby has turned into a successful business. His talented woodwork is for sale at Cap’s Corner, his Chickasaw County furniture business.

“This is what I enjoy doing. I settled down doing this right here. I started out with three picnic tables and sold them five years ago. I started this business when I was 70, I’m 75 now. It’s grown to much more than I ever expected,” Mixon said.

Now Mixon creates a wide variety of hand designed furniture. From picnic tables and chairs, to garbage bins, dog houses, and even play sets, it’s all built with pressure treated pine.

“I buy quality product, I pick my lumber and I pick the best that they’ve got. I try to keep the knots out of it and build a very high quality product,” Mixon said.

The corner along Highway 15 where Mixon has set up shop runs deep in family history. In the 1940s his father, Cap Mixon, ran a store in the same location. When it closed down in the 1980s, they turned it into a home where Mixon’s son lived until the tornado of April 2011.

“Since the tornado came, it blew away the old store building and the house. I built back a shop on it. It’s enjoyable to meet the people of the public and have satisfied people that buy my product,” said Mixon.

The furniture at Cap’s Corner is high quality and comfortable. Mixon’s swings are one of the top sellers.

“All these things are my design, including the porch swing. I tell people to sit down in them because you don’t know what a swing is until you do sit on it. They can look the same but not sit the same. My wife told me the 10 foot table I built would not sell, because it is so long. But I’ve sold a lot of them. It’s about the only place you’ll find a 10 foot picnic table,” Mixon said.

Mixon will also build furniture custom to what you’d like, and he will deliver. His play sets and picnic tables are used at schools, churches and even Oktibbeha County Lake.

You can find Cap’s Corner on Highway 15 South, halfway between Woodland and Houston. Call (662)456-4621 for more information.
