WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – A hidden treasure in West Point is teaching all ages the art of pottery.

Leslie Jones has turned her hobby into a business. At Persnickety Pottery in West Point, she shares her joy of pottery making with others, in a place that feels like the comfort of your own home.

“I used to just do this at home in my shop, and my husband eventually told me if I didn’t stop painting, I had to open up a business because we had pottery overflowing inside of our home,” Jones said.

The business opened five years ago and offers paint your own pottery, clay classes and wheel classes to children and adults. You can also arrange birthday parties or group paints. And at Persnickety Pottery they make the process easy. You can create just about anything.

“Everything you can think of. If you can dream it up, we can make it happen. First we take the clay and pour it in molds. Once it’s ready to be cleaned and fired once, it’s bisque. Customers paint on bisque. We provide the paints and tell them a few instructions. They can paint whatever they want to on it. In the kiln it will fire for 24 hours. By the time you put it in and it cools off enough to get it out, it’s about a 24 hour return,” Jones said.

“They have great employees here that will help you do whatever you want and help you make it look good. Even if you’re not a good artist. A lot of people don’t know that you can trace and then color in the lines and the tracing goes away. Even if your children just splash paint on, it looks really good once it’s fired,” said customer Melanie Busby.

“I love meeting all the different people that come in. I love when the things go in the kiln, barely painted and they come out bright and shiny. The kids just love getting their things back,” said Jones.

Persnickety Pottery is located at 1735 East Church Hill in West Point. The business is open Monday through Friday from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. or by appointment. Call (662)494-5754 or visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/Persnickety-Pottery/277643207215 for more information.
