HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) – Despite the devastating fire last week, Houlka Attendance Center intends to stay on track with the start of the new school year. It was just one week before Houlka Attendance center kicked off another school year, when the unexpected happened. On the afternoon of July 3oth flames were shooting from the building that housed the Middle School, an auditorium, and a computer lab. Later that afternoon, school leaders vowed to begin classes – on time.

“We have had lots of volunteers come in and help the teachers that have been displaced come in and set things up.”

With help from the community members and parents, clean-up is well underway. 5th and 6th Grade teachers are rushing to set u their new classrooms.

“The 6th grade students will be moved back to the, what we call Elementary side of the road.”

Constructed in 1935, the now burned out building was a historic structure on campus. School leaders say they are turning to an architect to restore and rebuild. Until then, they are looking on the bright side of the situation.

“We just added a little rigor to the start of our school year.”
