HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) -The 4th of July holiday celebrates our independence and remembers those who have fought for it as well. That’s what one Chickasaw County city is doing today.

People were lined on the streets waiting to hear the bands play. And barbecues were ready and fired up to grill. The annual Houston Homecoming got to a get start in the courthouse square.

“We call it out Houston Homecoming, we always do it the Saturday before the 4th of July and it’s part of our 4th of July celebration. We’re honoring our veterans and we shoot fireworks at 9 o’clock,” said Homecoming Chair Larry Wilson.

Not only are fireworks part of the mix but entertainment from jazz, country and rock bands will go on all day long.

“This right here is truly the backbone of this country and you don’t see this kind of relationship where people come together, have a great time together and they don’t have to be doing that much. Today we have classes that are having class reunions, we have our solar car team that the Lord has blessed in so many ways,” said Homecoming committee member Chuck Carroll.

“We’re just really excited to be here today to be out in the community and to meet members of the community and tell them about our car. Just see everything that’s going on at the Houston Homecoming this year,” said Solar Car Team Captain Trey Franklin.

Flags decorated sidewalks, along with signs remembering all the divisions of the armed services.

This is the 12th consecutive year for the Houston Homecoming event.
