HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – Four Houston High School Students pair their senses of taste and smell, with a healthy dose of creativity to bring home awards on the national level.

“I was really excited to know that our team won bronze and it was just a proud feeling that our team from such a small town won,” said team member Lindsay Bevels.

They tasted, smelled and created their way to the top. The teens won at the state level back in April and have been working hard ever since. They recently competed, for the first time, in the Future Farmers of America National Convention in Indianapolis. The four students had to pass various flavor and aroma tests.

“They were given a situation where they were having to create for retail markets and it was more the baby boomer era so it would be something for somebody to take home, be able to enjoy as a single serving,” said FFA Advisor Karen Cook.

It was a new experience for these Houston FFA students to compete in a National Contest against 31 other states.

“I feel like I’ve taught them how to make sure that they have good quality food, that they know how to prepare food in their home and take care of that food,” added Mrs.Cook.

During the two day competition, students had to recognize food with different safety and sanitation issues. A panel of judges kept a close eye on everything.

“It was pretty hard you know because like we had to create like a nutritional label and stuff like that and it all had to add up. So it was probably going against the judges trying to be presentable,” said team member Cory McDaniel.

Adviser Karen Cook couldn’t be more proud of her team and looks forward to seeing what path her students take in the future.

All four students earned awards.
