HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — Residents in one Houston neighborhood say their streets and drainage have been neglected for longer than they remember.

People living on Chestnut Drive still have a wait and see attitude, even with visible signs of street improvements in their neighborhood. In the last five years, the city has done some major street improvements. The state also has helped with some main roads. Now they hope investments will improve the quality of life in neighborhoods.

“All streets are very important to us. We are constantly trying to work and find ways to benefit the citizens that pay into this for better situations. Whether its streets, water, sewer, or whatever it may be,” said Stacey Parker, Houston Mayor.

The current work along Chestnut, Griffin, and Pecan Streets is focused on drainage, curbs and gutters. And the city wants to make sure its done right.

“We are not through with the drainage situation. There is still some major thought that’s got to be put into it as far as laying out and surveying the land. Making sure the water gets off some of these, as we call it, flat areas that holds water that destroys roads therefore destroys a community. So we are working hard at it,” said Parker.

Whether it be Fulton, Winona, or in this case Houston, bad roads are not taken care of over night.

“And just working toward that goal, takes time and patience and it takes ultimately money. And you know this day and time money is short for everybody,” said Parker.

Main Street in front of Houston City Hall is also getting a make over in an effort to beautify the city’s downtown.
