STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- The battle for the Senate between Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel has been an ugly one.

With the Republican primaries less than two weeks away, Cochran and McDaniel ad’s are everywhere.

Marty Wiseman, retired professor at Mississippi State University says poll after poll shows negative campaigning actually works. But the problem lies in who’s putting them out and the extent some are willing to go.

To further cloud the issue, a recent Supreme Court ruling opened the door for special interest groups to get more involved with little or no control from candidates.

“As compared to the old days where the approach was to put a rumor out there and assume everybody goes to a coffee shop to talk politics, now we have the internet, blogs, social media, we have so many ways for you to tell me something right now and then 10,000 people know it within an hour,” said Wiseman.

Another issue facing the republican party in Mississippi and around the country is the ongoing battle between the GOP and the Tea Party.
