LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-With a historic bridge nearing completion as a pedestrian walkway and park nearing completion, Lowndes County and Columbus are turning their attention to development opportunities it might create. Lowndes County Supervisor Leroy Brooks wants the city and county to create a committee that will look at ways to attract commercial and residential development to what is known as the Island. The area between the Old Tombigbee River and the Tenn-Tom Waterway once was a major commercial area but that changed when the new Highway 82 was built. City and county leaders say the opening of the old bridge next month provides an extension to the Riverwalk and downtown that would be a natural area for new developments with the right planning and incentives.
