ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Monday marks three months since the devastating April 28th tornado rolled through Itawamba County.

Despite the destruction, residents are still fighting hard to get back on their feet.

On April 28th, an EF-3 tornado ripped through Itawamba County leaving 200 homes damaged and 15 destroyed.

But three months later and the community continues to rebuild brick at a time.
“Our recovery work has went very well. The people in this community are very strong. A lot of help has come into the community,” says Captain Jason Dickinson.

Itawamba resident, Sharon Sarver, remembers the day she was curled up with her family in her mobile home awaiting the storm.

“The ceiling was coming down like this and the walls were coming in and things were flying through the air,” says Sharon Sarver.

Even though she lost her home, a church group from Indiana is helping Sharon get things back in order.

“It’s really overwhelming. You get all these people that come out and hug you and want to help you and they just want to do so much,” says Sarver.

Senior Pastor at Oakridge Christian Church in Tupelo, Anthony Pierce knows all too well the impact of the April 28th storm.

That’s why he and the Indiana church group are bringing hope for Sharon’s future.

“I had damage in the tornado and so having people come and help it just helps make things a little more bearable. Seeing progress offers a little bit a light of hope,” says Anthony Pierce.

“Tornado damage I think can be like some of the most devastating ones so it’s just a little bit more motivating to kind of come out and help like just knowing what you’re doing,” says Isaac Hanny.

Known for it’s helping hands and close relationships, there is no doubt the Itawamba community will recover stronger than ever.

FEMA is expected to meet with county leaders Tuesday to determine their current status.
